Designated Pilot Examiners
A Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) conducts the practical test on behalf of the FAA. Scheduling and expectations vary by examiner and local FSDO, so plan well ahead and confirm what documents and endorsements your examiner requires.

Oral Exam Preparation
The practical test begins with an oral exam covering your knowledge and decision-making. Be ready to explain, not just recite:
- Federal Aviation Regulations relevant to your certificate and flight (see the regulations guide).
- Aircraft systems, performance, and limitations of the airplane you will fly.
- Weather, airspace, and cross-country planning basics.
- Emergency procedures and aeronautical decision-making.
Work through the pre-solo exam and BFR review — both are excellent oral-prep practice.
